Kip McGrath West Norwood is a private provision supporting the work of local schools, Local Authority and private concerns. We provide support for students whose needs mean they experience difficulties coping in the school system.
These could be students who are:
We are able to offer both long and short-term provision and are perfectly willing to be flexible to ensure the students needs are being met. We are also happy to support your school by providing a placement at short notice as long as the needs of the other students are not detrimentally affected. Where students are temporarily excluded, we would work with all parties to ensure a smooth reintegration or a managed move to another school.
Why does this work so well?
We have the following terms and conditions:
Being a small centre, we have limited catering facilities; therefore we are unable to provide school dinners. Students may bring a packed lunch or money to buy lunch. Students entitled to free school meals will be given £2 per day, which will be passed on to the school or local authority. We are able to provide drinks, fruit and toast.
These could be students who are:
- Excluded or are close to being excluded for whatever reason
- Experiencing or who have experienced trauma in their lives
- Not making the expected progress required
- Need a change of provision
- Need a managed transfer to another school

Why does this work so well?
- Students undertake an initial assessment on arrival at the centre, which informs their Individual Learning Programme.
- The work set is at their level and addresses their preferred method of learning.
- Students and staff contribute to and are therefore very clear about the targets being worked towards.
- Student’s interests and hobbies are used to involve students.
- We like to work closely with school staff, parents and other professionals involved with the student, to ensure a uniform approach is being taken with the student.
- Trust is very important. We do not make friends with the students but we do make it clear to them that we are there to support them in both their academic and behavioural activities.
- We do encourage students to develop more mature attitudes in their interactions with staff and peers and to consider relevant issues and to ask questions.
- The number and combination of students present at the centre at any one time is carefully monitored to ensure successful learning takes place. A small provision is essential to enable students to focus without all the distractions normally around them.
- We are staffed by experienced teachers, who have many years of experience supporting students that are experiencing difficulties.
- Monthly reports are submitted top the placing school / authority (weekly if required) and parents and carers are kept fully informed
- We are currently developing a partnership with Therapy 4 Life.
We have the following terms and conditions:
- The minimum placement is for 10 days. For longer placements, 2 weeks notice must be given.
- Relevant school records, including statements of special educational needs, should be available as soon as, if not before, the student starts attending.
- In line with Ofsted's recent recommendations in their review of alternative provision, regular contact with the placing school or authority is required along with regular visits. A clear plan should be in place for the student’s future. It is essential that the student doesn't feel they have been 'dumped' at the centre, but are aware and involved in the plan.
- We are happy to support students who have a statement of special educational need. There are of course additional costs for one to one support at a cost of £20 per hour or full time one at a cost of £140 per day.
